Abdirashid Hidig, a member of the Somali federal parliament and one of the leaders of the Jubbaland council for change, has said he will open a case against Francisco Madeira, Special Representative of the African Union to Somalia. Hidig was angered by recent remarks by the ambassador at a UN Security Council meeting in New York, in which he mentioned the Ogaden sub-clan by name in describing the agreement between members of the council for change, including Hidig, and Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe, in the Kenyan capital Nairobi last month.
The AU envoy was noting the agreement did not involve all clans in Jubbaland even as he welcomed it.
"We take note of the recent developments that saw the Jubbaland leader and Ogaden opposition leaders reach a settlement that led to mutual recognition and cohabitation. We however insist on the need to go further and ensure all clans come together in an all Jubbaland stakeholders congregation to find a lasting solution to the political, social and economic problems that continue to besiege that federal member state,” the ambassador had said.
However, Hidig said the comments had offended one of the Somali clans and amounted to interference in Somalia’s clan politics by the AU ambassador.
"Since the Somali civil war broke out in 1991, no foreign diplomat has used the name of a clan in such a context, something Madeira did,” said Hidig, adding that the ambassador had lost credibility and neutrality.
He called on the federal parliament, UN and the AU to remove Madeira from his position given that some communities have lost faith in his neutrality.
Wadajir Party Leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame also recently took issue with ambassador’s comments, accusing him creating divisions among Somali clans.
"We recently cautioned about the SRCC’s [Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson] meddling in Somali internal politics by creating divisions among Somali clans at the cost of neglecting his core mandate of security support and security transition. This is a vindication that he is doing Villa Somalia’s bidding,” Warsame said in a post on his Twitter account.
Madeira made the comments at a UN Security Council Meeting on the situation in Somalia, held in New York, USA, on 21 May.
