European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the new funding package during a visit to Nuuk.

The additional money, covering 2026 and 2027, is expected to support projects involving critical raw materials, renewable energy, submarine cables, satellite connectivity, data centres and administrative capacity.

It comes on top of approximately €225 million already allocated to Greenland under the EU's 2021–2027 framework.

Brussels is also proposing approximately €530 million for Greenland between 2028 and 2034, subject to negotiations over the EU's next long-term budget.

But money is only part of the story.

Greenland's geographical position between North America and Europe, its vast mineral resources and its strategic importance to Arctic defence have transformed the island into one of the world's most consequential geopolitical territories.

The EU increasingly regards Greenland not merely as a development partner but as an essential component of European economic and security strategy.

Critical minerals are particularly important.

Europe is attempting to reduce its dependence on China for raw materials needed for batteries, renewable-energy systems, advanced electronics and defence technologies. Greenland possesses significant deposits that could potentially contribute to that strategy.

Security considerations are growing simultaneously.

EU member states have increased their military engagement around Greenland, while Brussels is preparing a revised Arctic strategy expected to place greater emphasis on security, resilience and strategic investment.

Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and is not itself an EU member.

Its government has simultaneously sought greater economic independence and international investment, giving Nuuk increasing leverage as major powers compete for influence in the Arctic.

For Brussels, the message of the latest investment is therefore strategic as much as economic:

Europe intends to remain a major power in Greenland and the wider Arctic.

The struggle for influence in the far north is no longer a distant geopolitical scenario.

It is already underway.
