The Somali fisheries company announces plans for a major fish storage facility in Hobyo, maritime resource monitoring, international fishing partnerships and employment creation, while promoting seafood consumption across Somalia.

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – October 12, 2026 (Waagacusub Media) — GADALE Seafood Ltd, a Somali fisheries, seafood trading and maritime services company, has unveiled an ambitious development strategy aimed at strengthening Somalia's blue economy, supporting responsible fishing operations and creating employment opportunities for coastal communities.

Founded by Somali-Dutch entrepreneur and investigative journalist Dahir Abdulle Alasow, the company is positioning itself as a commercial partner for international fishing operators, seafood investors and maritime businesses seeking to operate in Somali waters.

GADALE's activities and proposed investments focus on Hobyo in Galmudug State, Adale in Hirshabelle State, Barawe in South West State and Mogadishu, with particular emphasis on fisheries infrastructure, maritime resource monitoring, vessel services and seafood exports.

Authorisation to Monitor Marine Resource Harvesting

According to the company, GADALE Seafood Ltd has received authorisation relating to the monitoring of fishing activities and the harvesting of Somalia's marine resources.

The company says this authorisation will support its efforts to promote responsible fishing practices, improve oversight of commercial fishing operations and contribute to the sustainable management of Somalia's marine resources.

GADALE intends to cooperate with relevant federal and state authorities to support compliance with applicable fisheries regulations.

Its proposed monitoring activities include documenting fishing operations, supporting the identification of licensed vessels, encouraging responsible harvesting practices and reporting suspected regulatory violations to the competent authorities.

The company emphasises the importance of protecting Somalia's marine resources from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

The precise scope of the reported authorisation, including any geographical or operational limitations, remains subject to the terms of the relevant government approval.

Fishing Licence Assistance for International Vessels

GADALE also intends to provide commercial representation and regulatory assistance to foreign fishing companies seeking to operate legally in Somali waters.

The company plans to support international vessel operators through fishing licence applications, regulatory documentation, government liaison and local business coordination.

Its services will include assistance with applications and renewals, coordination with relevant federal and state fisheries institutions, and guidance on applicable operational requirements.

Fishing licences and regulatory approvals will continue to be issued exclusively by the competent government authorities.

GADALE aims to simplify legitimate commercial engagement while promoting compliance, transparency and responsible resource management.

Maritime Security Coordination in Hobyo, Adale and Barawe

Another component of GADALE's strategy is the development of maritime security coordination and vessel safety services.

The company intends to support fishing vessels operating around Hobyo, Adale and Barawe by facilitating communication with relevant maritime authorities and authorised security providers.

These services are expected to include operational risk assessments, emergency communication arrangements, vessel safety coordination and assistance with local maritime procedures.

GADALE aims to contribute to a safer commercial environment for fishing operators while respecting the responsibilities and legal powers of Somalia's maritime security institutions.

Any direct security services would require the relevant licences, agreements and government approvals.

Major Fish Storage and Processing Facility Planned for Hobyo

One of GADALE Seafood Ltd's flagship initiatives is the planned construction of a major fish storage and preservation facility in Hobyo, Galmudug State.

The proposed facility is intended to serve as an important centre for seafood collection, refrigeration, storage, processing and commercial distribution.

The development is expected to include modern cold-storage infrastructure, ice-production equipment, refrigerated handling facilities and supporting logistics services.

By improving the preservation and commercial handling of seafood, GADALE aims to reduce post-harvest losses and strengthen the ability of local fishermen to supply domestic and international markets.

The company also intends to explore renewable energy solutions to support refrigeration and other operational requirements.

Creating Employment Opportunities for Coastal Communities

The Hobyo development is designed to create employment opportunities for residents, particularly young people and women.

Potential jobs would include fish handling, refrigeration operations, seafood processing, packaging, transportation, equipment maintenance, administration and commercial distribution.

GADALE also plans to explore training programmes that could help local workers acquire practical skills in modern fisheries operations and seafood quality management.

The company hopes the facility will support local fishermen, stimulate commercial activity and contribute to sustainable economic development in Hobyo.

The project's final investment value, construction schedule and operational capacity have not yet been announced.

Promoting Seafood Consumption Across Somalia

Beyond commercial fishing and exports, GADALE Seafood Ltd intends to launch initiatives encouraging greater seafood consumption among Somali communities.

Despite Somalia's extensive coastline and significant marine resources, seafood consumption remains relatively limited in many inland communities compared with other sources of animal protein.

GADALE believes that promoting seafood as part of a balanced diet could create additional domestic demand while supporting fishermen and local seafood businesses.

The company's proposed awareness initiatives will focus on the nutritional benefits of fish, safe seafood preparation, food hygiene and the importance of incorporating fish into a varied diet.

Fish can provide high-quality protein and essential nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12 and minerals, depending on the species.

GADALE intends to explore cooperation with restaurants, hotels, retailers, community organisations and educational institutions to encourage seafood consumption.

The initiative could also support domestic seafood distribution networks connecting coastal fishing communities with consumers in Mogadishu and other Somali cities.

International Partnerships with Europe, Asia and the Middle East

GADALE plans to pursue commercial relationships with fishing companies and seafood investors in the Netherlands, Italy, China, Iran and Yemen.

The company is particularly interested in working with established international operators that have experience in commercial fishing, seafood processing, cold-chain logistics and African fisheries markets.

Potential cooperation could involve vessel representation, seafood procurement, technical expertise, infrastructure investment and export development.

GADALE intends to explore joint ventures and commercial agreements that could bring international expertise and investment into Somalia's fisheries industry.

No agreements with the prospective international partners have yet been confirmed.

Supporting Sustainable Fisheries Development

The company's expansion plans coincide with broader national efforts to strengthen Somalia's fisheries sector.

The World Bank-supported BADMAAL project, with a financing envelope of approximately $55 million, seeks to improve fisheries management, coastal livelihoods and sustainable marine resource development.

GADALE intends to explore opportunities for private-sector participation, technical assistance and potential grant-supported initiatives connected to fisheries infrastructure.

The company has not announced any financing agreement or grant award under BADMAAL.

Building a Stronger Blue Economy

GADALE Seafood Ltd believes Somalia's marine resources can play a greater role in national economic development through responsible investment, improved infrastructure and international commercial cooperation.

The company's strategy combines fisheries services, marine resource monitoring, seafood preservation, international trade and domestic market development.

Its proposed operations in Hobyo, Adale, Barawe and Mogadishu are intended to support coastal communities while creating opportunities for sustainable commercial growth.

By investing in modern storage infrastructure and encouraging seafood consumption, GADALE hopes to strengthen both the supply and demand sides of Somalia's fisheries economy.

From Somali Waters to Global Markets

GADALE Seafood Ltd's long-term vision is to help transform Somalia's fisheries sector into a competitive, sustainable and internationally connected industry.

The planned Hobyo fish storage facility, maritime monitoring activities, international partnerships and seafood consumption initiatives form part of a broader strategy to create jobs, protect marine resources and expand economic opportunities.

Through responsible fishing, modern infrastructure and international cooperation, GADALE aims to help turn Somalia's marine wealth into lasting economic benefits for its people.
