Speaking from a hospital bed in Abu Dhabi during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, Machchhar recounted how he was seriously wounded and lying on the cockpit floor as the aircraft entered a rapid descent.
The incident occurred Wednesday aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, carrying 174 passengers and crew. According to Reuters and Israeli officials, the co-pilot stabbed Machchhar and allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft. Flight-tracking data reviewed by Reuters showed the plane losing more than 16,000 feet in just over 30 seconds during its most dramatic plunge.
Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to release the cockpit door.
Passengers and crew then entered the cockpit and subdued the co-pilot. A reserve flydubai flight crew travelling aboard the aircraft subsequently took control and safely landed the plane at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
During his conversation with Modi, Machchhar said his 17 years of flying experience — including 11 years as a captain — made him understand the gravity of the situation as the aircraft descended.
He explained that, although injured and on the floor, he realised reaching the cockpit door was crucial because people aboard the aircraft could otherwise lose their lives.
Modi praised the captain's courage and presence of mind during the emergency. Machchhar, who appeared in the video with bandages on his head and hands, became emotional while recounting the ordeal.
The co-pilot was initially detained by Saudi authorities following the emergency landing and was later transferred to the United Arab Emirates. Reuters reported Friday that Israeli investigators are expected to participate alongside Emirati authorities in examining the incident, including the suspect's motives and background.
The suspect has been identified by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an Omani national, although his identity has not been publicly disclosed.
Authorities have not established a definitive motive. The UAE-led investigation is examining the circumstances surrounding the attack, and flydubai has urged against speculation while the investigation remains underway.
The extraordinary intervention by the wounded captain, passengers, crew and reserve pilots ultimately allowed all those aboard to survive one of the most dramatic aviation emergencies in the region in recent years.
