MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — An emotional press conference held in Mogadishu by members of a Somali women's organization has drawn renewed attention to the continued detention of Sadia Moalim Ali, a woman who supporters say remains imprisoned despite growing calls for her release. Several participants reportedly broke down in tears while speaking about Sadia's case, describing her detention as unjust and expressing concern over her wellbeing.

Calls for Release

According to speakers at the event, Sadia Moalim Ali previously worked as a Bajaj (auto-rickshaw) driver in Mogadishu and is the mother of an infant child. Participants argued that her continued detention has caused hardship for both her and her family.

Batulo Ahmed Gabale, identified as chairperson of the organization, criticized Somali authorities over the case and questioned why Sadia remains in custody while other detainees linked to the same political environment have reportedly been released.

"Many others have regained their freedom, yet Sadia remains behind bars,” she said during the press conference.

Political and Human Rights Concerns

Speakers at the gathering accused Somali authorities of violating fundamental rights and called for greater protection of women, mothers, and vulnerable detainees.

The event also highlighted broader concerns regarding:

  • freedom of expression,

  • political detention,

  • women’s rights,

  • and access to fair judicial proceedings.

International Attention

Human rights advocates have continued to raise concerns about Sadia’s detention. Activists note that international organizations, including Amnesty International, have previously called for respect for due process and the protection of detainee rights in politically sensitive cases.

Court Proceedings

Supporters of Sadia point to developments in the legal process, including reports that parts of the prosecution file were returned for further review by the court. However, no final judicial determination has been announced regarding her case.

Growing Public Debate

As public attention surrounding the case continues to grow, women’s organizations, civil society groups, and human rights advocates are calling for transparency, due process, and an independent review of the circumstances surrounding Sadia Moalim Ali’s detention.
