MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Turkish government has appointed a new ambassador to Somalia, replacing Ambassador Alper Aktaş amid increasing political tensions and ongoing efforts to mediate the country's electoral and constitutional disputes.

According to a decree issued by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, diplomat Ferhat Alkan has been appointed as Turkey's new ambassador to Somalia. He succeeds Ambassador Alper Aktaş, who had served in Mogadishu and maintained close engagement with the Federal Government of Somalia.

The diplomatic change comes at a sensitive moment in Somali politics, as opposition leaders continue to challenge President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's legitimacy following the expiration of his constitutional term, arguing that the country has entered a transitional political period pending a broader electoral agreement.

Several opposition figures have recently accused Turkey of abandoning its traditional neutral role in Somali affairs and aligning itself too closely with the federal government. Critics pointed in particular to public statements and diplomatic engagements in which Ambassador Aktaş referred to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Opposition leaders argued that such language amounted to political recognition of a contested mandate and undermined Turkey's ability to serve as an impartial mediator between rival Somali political actors.

Turkey has not publicly linked the ambassadorial change to domestic political developments in Somalia, nor has Ankara indicated that the reassignment was connected to criticism from opposition groups.

However, the appointment comes as Turkey intensifies its diplomatic efforts to encourage dialogue between the Somali government and opposition leaders. Turkish officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of political stability in Somalia, where Ankara has invested heavily in security cooperation, infrastructure development, humanitarian assistance, and economic partnerships over the past decade.

Turkey remains one of Somalia's closest international partners and continues to play a significant role in the country's security sector, including military training programs and strategic development projects.

Political observers say the arrival of a new ambassador may provide an opportunity for Ankara to rebuild confidence among all Somali stakeholders as efforts continue to seek a negotiated solution to the country's political crisis.

While the reasons behind the diplomatic reshuffle remain unclear, the timing of the appointment is likely to attract considerable attention from both government officials and opposition leaders as Somalia navigates one of its most challenging political periods in recent years.
