MOGADISHU, Somalia — Reports emerging from Mogadishu indicate that heavy fighting erupted in parts of the capital amid escalating tensions between federal government forces and armed groups aligned with opposition figures.

According to opposition sources, the clashes began after government forces allegedly launched operations targeting residences associated with senior opposition leaders, including former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. Opposition representatives claim that government forces encountered strong resistance during the operations.

Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media also suggest that armed groups opposed to the government have taken control of strategic areas in northern Mogadishu. These claims could not be independently verified.

The developments come against the backdrop of a deepening political dispute over governance, constitutional legitimacy, and the future political direction of the country.

A statement issued by the Somali Future Council condemned the military operations and called on security forces to remain neutral and uphold their constitutional responsibilities.

Meanwhile, concerns are growing among residents and members of the international community about the potential impact of continued violence on civilians and the stability of the capital.

Observers warn that unless political leaders urgently return to dialogue, Somalia risks entering a new phase of political confrontation with serious consequences for national security and public safety.
