Mogadishu (Waagacusub Media) — Nine prominent Somali political figures, representing various parties, movements, and civic platforms, have officially announced the formation of a new broad-based political alliance named the "Union for National Dignity" (Midowga Haybad Qaran).
The leaders, many of whom previously held senior government positions, issued a joint statement declaring their decision to unite under a single national political platform aimed at restoring unity, good governance, and accountability in Somalia.
The statement further revealed that the alliance has endorsed former Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon "Saacid” as its presidential candidate for the upcoming 2026 national elections.
"The leaders have collectively acknowledged the deep fractures in national unity, the collapse of the economy, the neglect of essential public services, and the growing despair among Somali citizens toward their government,” the joint communiqué read.
According to sources close to the discussions, the formation of the Union for National Dignity follows a series of intensive consultations on the country’s overall situation — particularly regarding political instability, security challenges, economic hardship, and the weakening of public trust in state institutions.
The nine founding members — who have all resigned from their previous political parties and movements — emphasized that the new alliance seeks to offer a unified and credible alternative capable of steering Somalia toward stability and progress.
The founding members of the "Union for National Dignity” are:
Abdikarim Hussein Guled
Fahad Yasin Haji Dahir
Mohamed Abukar Islow (Ducaale)
Thabit Abdi Mohamed
Guuleed Saalax Barre
Abdi Aden Hoosow
Abdirizak Khilaaf Ahmed
Farah Ali Shire
Ducaale Aden Mohamed
Political analysts say the creation of this new alliance could significantly reshape Somalia’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections, especially given the influence and experience of its founding members.
The Union for National Dignity is expected to unveil its political agenda and national policy priorities in the coming weeks, focusing on reconciliation, economic recovery, institutional reform, and national sovereignty.
