The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) expressed outrage over the statement made by Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) falsely citing and quoting NUSOJ. In a CPJ statement entitled "Somalia intelligence agency detains journalist for weeks”, issued on 6 January 2016, cited that CPJ obtained information in this statement from NUSOJ.

NUSOJ categorically and unambiguously distances and disassociates itself with this CPJ statement. NUSOJ and its legitimately elected officials and staff did not speak to CPJ at all. NUSOJ had repeatedly declined to respond to CPJ emails, trying to look for information.

This CPJ statement is patently false and constitutes an unprecedented demonstration of reckless promotion of fraudulent use of the name of the union in order to misinform and mislead the general public. It is a deliberately fabricated falsehood made to masquerade as truth.

Having challenged several times CPJ for similar misinformation and falsehood, which they corrected, this is not an error in observation. Having done this knowingly and wilfully with intent to misinform or mislead, this kind of CPJ statement is part of well-known greedy competition of issuing statements bearing the name of local organisations in order to get unfair publicity or attention.

"Making false, invented, or fraudulent statement with the name of NUSOJ without our consent is unacceptable and we will take every possible action to protect our union’s name against any fraudulent act that is meant to misinform and mislead the public,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General.
