MOGADISHU, Somalia — Fierce fighting in Mogadishu has reportedly resulted in the destruction of several military vehicles and armored carriers originally supplied to Somali security forces by Turkey, according to witnesses and opposition sources.

The clashes erupted after opposition figures accused government forces of launching an attack on a political headquarters associated with former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in the Abdiaziz district of Mogadishu.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show damaged military equipment and burned vehicles following the confrontation. Witnesses said large numbers of residents gathered to observe the aftermath of the fighting in areas affected by the clashes.

Opposition groups claimed that Turkish-supplied military assets were used during operations against their forces. Some opposition figures also alleged that Turkish-made drones had been deployed in support of government military operations, although these claims could not be independently verified.

The developments have placed Turkey in an increasingly sensitive position due to its longstanding security cooperation with Somalia. Turkey has been one of Somalia's most important partners, providing military training, security assistance, and development support over the past decade.

Amid growing tensions, reports indicate that senior Turkish intelligence and diplomatic officials have arrived in Mogadishu to support mediation efforts aimed at preventing further escalation.

The opposition has expressed skepticism regarding Turkey's neutrality, accusing Ankara of favoring one side of the political dispute. Turkish officials have not publicly commented on those allegations.

Political analysts warn that continued armed confrontations risk undermining Somalia's fragile stability and could deepen divisions within state institutions and security forces.

International observers continue to call for restraint, dialogue, and a negotiated political settlement to prevent further violence and protect civilians caught in the conflict.
