MOGADISHU, Somalia — Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has alleged that weapons supplied by Turkey to the Somali government were used in attacks carried out against him and other political opponents.

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed did not directly accuse the Turkish government of ordering or planning the attacks. Instead, he claimed that drones and military equipment originally provided by Turkey to the Somali government were used in operations targeting him.

The President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, has also criticized the use of foreign-supplied military equipment in Somalia's internal political conflicts. According to opposition figures, Turkish-supplied weapons were allegedly used against civilians, members of the Somali National Army, former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

Former South West State leader Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen has similarly raised concerns regarding military operations conducted with equipment supplied by foreign partners. He has claimed that artillery systems and drones supplied to Somali security forces were used during violent confrontations in Baydhabo that resulted in civilian casualties and political upheaval.

Meanwhile, Turkey's Deputy Intelligence Chief reportedly traveled to Mogadishu amid rising political tensions and security concerns in the Somali capital. The visit came after images and videos circulated on social media showing Turkish-made military vehicles and artillery systems reportedly being burned on the streets of Mogadishu.

Turkey remains one of Somalia's closest international partners, having invested heavily in infrastructure, economic development, military training, and security assistance over the past decade. However, recent political disputes have increasingly drawn attention to the role of foreign-supplied military equipment in Somalia's domestic conflicts.

Political observers say it remains unclear whether Ankara will respond to growing criticism from opposition groups or continue its strong support for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Opposition leaders argue that his constitutional mandate expired on May 15, 2026, while the federal government rejects such claims.

The controversy has added a new dimension to Somalia's ongoing political crisis, raising questions about accountability, the use of foreign military assistance, and the future of Turkey's strategic partnership with Somalia.

Editor's Note: The claims contained in this article reflect allegations and statements made by Somali political figures. They have not been independently verified, and the governments of Somalia and Turkey may dispute or reject these allegations.
