MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — The EU-registered human rights and digital safety organization Solda Safety Network (SSN) has strongly condemned the continued detention of Somali activist Sadia Moalim Ali, describing her imprisonment as an act of political intimidation, abuse of power, and a serious violation of fundamental human rights.

According to the organization, Sadia Moalim Ali has reportedly spent 41 days in detention in Mogadishu, where concerns continue to grow regarding her physical and psychological condition.

Claims of Illness and Harsh Prison Conditions

Solda Safety Network stated that Sadia is allegedly being held in a small overcrowded prison cell under severe conditions while suffering from illness and limited access to proper medical treatment.

The organization further alleged that:

  • her detention is politically motivated,
  • she has been subjected to intimidation and abuse,
  • and her case reflects a broader pattern of fear-based suppression targeting freedom of expression in Somalia.

SSN described the situation as:

"An unlawful detention involving intimidation, political persecution, and treatment inconsistent with human dignity and the rule of law.”

Calls for International Intervention

The EU-registered advocacy organization called on:

  • international human rights organizations,
  • women’s rights groups,
  • civil society organizations,
  • and legal advocacy bodies

to urgently intervene and support Sadia Moalim Ali.

Solda Safety Network urged rights organizations to:

  • demand immediate medical care,
  • monitor prison conditions,
  • ensure fair legal proceedings,
  • and advocate for her immediate release.

Growing Human Rights Concerns

The detention has sparked growing public debate regarding:

  • arbitrary detention,
  • prison conditions,
  • political intimidation,
  • constitutional protections,
  • and freedom of expression in Somalia.

Observers say the case has become symbolic of wider concerns surrounding civil liberties and the treatment of politically sensitive detainees.

Demand for Justice

Solda Safety Network emphasized that:

"No woman should face imprisonment, intimidation, or suffering because of her opinions or peaceful expression.”

The organization called on Somali authorities to respect constitutional rights, guarantee transparency in judicial proceedings, and uphold Somalia’s international human rights obligations.
