MOGADISHU (Sunatimes) — Somalia’s security forces killed an Algerian fighter in a clash with Alshabaab extremists in the north of Mogadishu, sources said.

Abu Zainab Muhsin, better known as ‘Binu Muhsin’ was killed on Thursday in fighting in the troubled Karan district, north of Mogadishu as the militants lost a vital base during the fighting.

Muhsin, 48, was the main bomb-maker for Alshabaab, was killed with three bullets struck him on the head, according to sources.

“He was killed after bullets penetrated his head where he died instantly” sources in the Alshabaab group told Sunatimes.

In the fighting, Somali troops have seized ‘Mirenayo’, a strategic base for the militants on the edge of the Mogadishu coast.

No comments could be reached from Alshabaab to confirm the matter.

Officials estimate more than 500 foreign fighters in Somalia to enforce the Alqaeda inspired Alshabaab which is fighting the U.N backed Somali government and the African union peacekeeping forces.

The horn of Africa nation has been without central government since1991 after clan militias and warlords overthrown the dictator regime of Siad Barre that lastly leashed out to constant violence for more than 20 years.
