MOGADISHU, Somalia — A group of young Somalis recently released from detention after protesting against forced evictions in Mogadishu have pledged to continue their campaign for human rights, freedom of expression, and the protection of vulnerable communities.

Speaking during a public gathering attended by opposition figures and civil society representatives, the former detainees emphasized that they are not politicians but ordinary citizens who chose to stand alongside families affected by forced displacement and demolition operations.

"We were not arrested because we are politicians,” one of the speakers told the audience. "We were arrested because we opposed the forced eviction of poor families and exercised our right to speak out against injustice.”

The youths said their detention has strengthened their determination to advocate for the rights of displaced residents, many of whom have lost homes, businesses, and sources of income following demolition campaigns in parts of Mogadishu.

They argued that freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are fundamental rights protected under Somalia’s constitution and international human rights conventions.

"Our struggle is not about politics,” another former detainee said. "It is about defending citizens who have no voice and ensuring that people are not punished for peacefully expressing their opinions.”

The statements come as Somalia faces growing scrutiny from local and international human rights organizations over allegations of arbitrary arrests, restrictions on freedom of speech, and the treatment of activists and protesters.

Human rights advocates have repeatedly called on Somali authorities to respect due process, guarantee freedom of expression, and protect citizens participating in peaceful demonstrations.

The former detainees urged the government to end what they described as a pattern of intimidation against activists and community organizers, warning that continued restrictions on civic freedoms could deepen public frustration and undermine confidence in state institutions.

Their remarks also come ahead of planned demonstrations in Mogadishu, where activists and civil society groups are expected to raise concerns about forced evictions, human rights protections, and accountability.

Despite their recent imprisonment, the young activists insisted they would continue their campaign through peaceful and lawful means.

"We will continue to defend human rights, support displaced families, and demand justice,” one speaker said. "No one should be jailed for standing with the people.”
