Sunatimes.com - Somalia's federal government said the appointment of regional electoral commissions by Jubaland and Puntland leaders was unlawful, hours after the two federal member states announced lists of their electoral committees. In a statement, Somali Ministry of the Interior accused the two regional administrations of not submitting lists of the regional electoral boards they had appointed to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of the Interior.
The ministry described the appointment as unlawful and inconsistent with the September 17 agreement between the federal government and regional states.
UN envoy to Somalia James Swan on a visit to Hirshabelle regional capital, Jowhar hailed Jubaland and Puntland’s appointment of their electoral commissions as a "positive step”.
Somali government has not yet commented on calls by the two regional states for convening another meeting between the leaders of the federal government and federal member states in Mogadishu on January 30, just a week before the incumbent president’s term expires.
Opposition leaders have also welcomed the appointment and the meeting Puntland and Jubaland states urged to be convened to bring an end to a long-standing dispute over the upcoming elections.
