Former Mogadishu Mayor and prominent Somali politician Thabit Abdi Mohamed has issued a strongly worded public message directed at Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, warning that Somalia is entering a dangerous political moment marked by repression, displacement, corruption allegations, and declining public trust.
In a statement widely circulated on social media, Thabit accused the current administration of overseeing what critics describe as one of the most severe periods of political pressure and public frustration in recent years.

According to Thabit, journalists have been detained for "telling the truth,” civilians punished over political opinions, and both public and private property subjected to alleged abuse and unlawful seizure. He further pointed to the growing displacement crisis in Mogadishu, where thousands of families have reportedly been removed from contested lands in the Banadir region.

"The people are losing hope,” Thabit stated, warning that the political system Somalia once collectively agreed upon now faces serious danger due to what he described as attempts to centralize power.

The former mayor also referenced President Hassan Sheikh’s previous political slogan, "Qabyo ninkeedaa dhammaystira” ("The one who started the unfinished work should complete it”), arguing that the current situation has instead evolved into what he described as "cagaf ku wada qaado,” a Somali phrase suggesting forceful demolitions and displacement.

Thabit urged the president to allow citizens to peacefully express their views through demonstrations rather than attempting to suppress public dissent through force or intimidation.

"I say to the President: if life has become difficult for the people, then at the very least they should be allowed to peacefully and freely express their opinions tomorrow,” he said.

He further warned against actions that could lead Somalia to face accusations of lacking political legitimacy after May 16, 2026, referencing growing opposition concerns surrounding governance and constitutional disputes.

The remarks come amid rising political tensions in Mogadishu, increasing arrests of journalists and youth activists, and fears of confrontation linked to planned opposition demonstrations in the capital.

Political observers say the public intervention by Thabit reflects widening divisions within Somalia’s political landscape and growing concern over the country’s democratic direction.

At the time of publication, Somalia’s federal government had not issued an official response to the former mayor’s remarks.
