Somalia is facing mounting criticism amid growing allegations of corruption, political repression, forced displacement, and an escalating crackdown on journalists, youth activists, and government critics in the capital, Mogadishu. Over recent months, concerns have intensified over what activists, opposition figures, and sections of civil society describe as one of the worst periods of political intimidation and abuse of power witnessed in the city in years.
The controversy comes amid ongoing disputes surrounding mass displacement operations in parts of the Banadir region, where thousands of families were reportedly removed from disputed lands. Critics accuse authorities and powerful business-linked actors of benefiting from land seizures while vulnerable civilians continue to face homelessness, insecurity, and economic hardship.

At the same time, journalists, online commentators, youth organizers, and social media activists have increasingly reported arrests, intimidation, and threats linked to their political views, reporting activities, or support for planned demonstrations in Mogadishu.

Human rights advocates warn that the situation is creating a climate of fear in which freedom of expression and independent journalism are coming under severe pressure.

Several young media figures and activists have reportedly been detained in recent weeks, with critics arguing that the arrests reflect a widening campaign to silence dissent and discourage public criticism of government policies.

Opposition leaders have also accused authorities of using security institutions to suppress political opponents instead of focusing on national security challenges facing the country.

Observers say the deteriorating political environment risks deepening instability at a time when Somalia is already confronting major security, economic, and humanitarian pressures.

The latest tensions have also raised fears of possible confrontations linked to planned anti-government demonstrations in Mogadishu, as political rhetoric between opposition groups and government officials continues to escalate.

International human rights organizations and Somali civil society groups are now being urged to closely monitor developments in the capital amid growing concerns over arbitrary arrests, media repression, and alleged abuses against civilians.

Despite the allegations, Somali federal authorities have not publicly responded to many of the accusations circulating online and within opposition circles.

Political analysts warn that unless tensions are addressed through dialogue, accountability, and respect for constitutional freedoms, Mogadishu could face a deeper political crisis capable of undermining public trust and national stability.
