MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — International representatives in Somalia reportedly convened an emergency meeting inside the heavily fortified Halane Compound to discuss the country's escalating political tensions and possible developments after May 15, according to diplomatic sources familiar with the discussions.
The closed-door meeting reportedly focused on growing concerns surrounding governance, constitutional disputes, political legitimacy, and the future stability of Somalia’s federal institutions amid mounting domestic and international scrutiny.
Diplomatic sources claim officials at the meeting referenced the World Bank’s Operational Policy OP 7.30, a framework associated with situations involving disputed governance structures, constitutional breakdowns, or questions regarding state legitimacy.
According to individuals briefed on the discussions, participants raised concerns over several sensitive issues, including:
ongoing land disputes and forced evictions in Mogadishu,
controversial constitutional amendment processes,
disputed electoral matters,
and recent political developments in Baidoa, which some representatives reportedly criticized during the session.
Sources further indicated that several international representatives expressed frustration over what they described as insufficient commitment by Somalia’s federal leadership toward inclusive political dialogue and national consensus-building.
The meeting reportedly examined whether increased international diplomatic pressure may become necessary if political tensions continue to intensify in the coming weeks.
Political analysts warn that continued disputes over constitutional reforms, elections, and governance legitimacy could deepen instability in Somalia at a time when the country is already facing serious security and humanitarian challenges.
