In a statement issued today, ASOJ expressed deep concern over the detention of journalists identified as Rowdo Xasan Taakilo, Xamdi Cabdi Caddoow, Cabdixamid Cabdikariim Xuseen, Cabdixakiim Muxuddiin Sheekh Cali, and Muscab Mire Indhayare, who were reportedly apprehended by security forces while on their way home.

ASOJ stated that the arrest of journalists under such circumstances raises grave concerns about the safety and independence of media professionals in Somalia. The organization emphasized that journalists must be allowed to carry out their work without fear of intimidation, harassment, or arbitrary detention.

"The targeting of journalists is unacceptable and undermines democratic principles, transparency, and accountability,” the statement read.

The organization called on the Federal Government of Somalia to:

Immediately and unconditionally release the detained journalists

Provide clear legal justification for their arrest

Ensure the protection and safety of all media workers across the country

ASOJ further urged security agencies to respect both national laws and international human rights standards, including the protection of freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
