China has issued a firm diplomatic warning against any attempt to blockade the strategic Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that such a move would violate international law and risk triggering severe global economic consequences.
Speaking on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that freedom of navigation through international waterways must be respected, stressing that no country has the legal authority to obstruct innocent passage or impede transit through international straits used for global trade.
The statement comes amid rising tensions following remarks by US President Donald Trump, who reportedly threatened to impose a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz as part of escalating pressure on Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with nearly 20 percent of global oil supplies passing through the narrow waterway. Any disruption to shipping routes in the region could significantly impact international energy markets and destabilize the global economy.
Chinese analysts have warned that a blockade would not only affect Iran’s oil exports but also have far-reaching consequences for oil-importing nations across Europe and Asia. Li Haidong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, noted that such a move could shift the burden of a US-instigated conflict onto the broader international community.
Beijing also rejected allegations that it is supplying weapons or dual-use technology to Iran, dismissing the claims as "groundless smears.” Guo reiterated that China maintains strict controls over arms exports in line with domestic regulations and international obligations.
Meanwhile, the geopolitical divide appears to be widening, as key US allies signal reluctance to support a blockade. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the United Kingdom would not be drawn into the Iran conflict or participate in any effort to close the Strait of Hormuz. Similarly, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for the immediate reopening of the waterway and the restoration of free navigation.
China further warned against escalating economic tensions, responding to US threats of imposing additional tariffs by stating that "trade wars have no winners.”
The developments highlight growing international concern that actions taken in the Gulf region could have widespread repercussions, extending far beyond the immediate parties involved and placing additional strain on global stability.
