Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Solda Safety Network has officially commended the Government of Ethiopia following a major security operation that led to the arrest of a large international human trafficking network responsible for the abuse and exploitation of African migrants.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the organization described the operation as a "significant and historic step toward justice", emphasizing its importance in dismantling organized trafficking networks operating across Africa and beyond.
Key Suspect and Network Dismantled
Ethiopian authorities confirmed the arrest of a suspect identified as Dawit, along with several associates believed to be part of a long-standing international smuggling ring.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspect is accused of:
Trafficking more than 3,000 individuals
Being linked to the deaths of at least 100 migrants
Involvement in the sexual abuse of at least 50 women
Officials say the network maintained operational links with traffickers based in Libya, a known transit hub for migrants attempting to reach Europe through dangerous and often deadly routes.
International Cooperation Behind the Operation
The successful arrests were made possible through coordinated efforts between:
Ethiopian security agencies
International anti-trafficking organizations
Cross-border intelligence cooperation
This highlights the growing importance of global collaboration in combating transnational organized crime, particularly human trafficking.
Solda Safety Network Calls for Justice
The Solda Safety Network urged authorities to ensure that all individuals involved in trafficking networks are brought to justice. The organization also reaffirmed its commitment to tracking and exposing traffickers originating from countries such as Somalia and Egypt, who are believed to be connected to broader smuggling chains.
"We will continue to advocate for victims and support efforts to dismantle these criminal networks,” the statement said.
A Step Toward Ending Migrant Exploitation
Human trafficking remains one of the most pressing humanitarian crises affecting African migrants, many of whom face extreme violence, exploitation, and death along migration routes.
The Ethiopian operation is seen as a critical breakthrough that could disrupt major trafficking corridors and prevent further loss of life.
