The race for Galmudug state leadership has taken a remarkable turn as a broad political and community coalition has rallied behind Liban Ahmed, signaling a significant change in the dynamics of the upcoming election. What began as a quiet consultation among elders has transformed into a movement uniting diverse societal and clan interests.
Over recent weeks, decision-making groups across multiple districts have voiced support for Liban, describing him as a candidate capable of reducing tensions and restoring confidence in state leadership. According to political observers, his growing appeal lies not in political bargaining, but in his reputation for neutrality and problem-solving.

A rare moment of alignment among Galmudug communities

In a region where political competition often deepens fragmentation, Liban’s bid is seen as one of the few candidacies able to bring rival groups to the same table. Representatives from youth networks, religious councils, women’s associations and civil society organisations say his candidacy offers "a path toward predictable governance.”

A community elder from Mudug summarized the sentiment:

"This election needs a leader who can cool the temperature, not raise it. Liban is someone we can all work with.”

Track record of mediation elevates his credibility

Liban’s experience mediating local disputes and bridging federal–state differences is being widely pointed to as the core of his momentum. Figures involved in the elections note that his name emerged repeatedly during weeks of internal dialogue among clan leaders seeking a candidate who could preserve stability rather than fuel rivalry.

Security reform and reconciliation as top priorities

Throughout his campaign engagements, Liban has highlighted two critical policy pillars:

Stabilizing the security architecture through collaboration with communities

Promoting reconciliation as a foundation for long-term development

His past involvement with reconciliation committees and grassroots peace initiatives has made security personnel and local governance actors more receptive to his message.

Grassroots machinery in full motion

Support networks backing Liban are now active across Galmudug’s districts — not only among elite politicians, but at the neighbourhood and settlement level. Activists supporting his campaign describe him as someone who listens first and speaks later, a trait that has earned him loyalty in areas where political trust is fragile.

A platform built on inclusion and services

If elected, Liban says he will prioritise:

Expanding access to education and healthcare

Improving public administration and accountability

Developing infrastructure and long-term economic opportunities

Ensuring political inclusion for all clans and districts

His supporters say the platform is practical rather than rhetorical, aimed at producing real outcomes rather than symbolic promises.

Where does the race stand now?

With voting approaching, Liban Ahmed enters the final stretch of the election period as the most widely accepted candidate across the political spectrum. Whether this momentum translates into victory depends on how the final alliances form — but one reality is clear:

His candidacy has already reshaped expectations about what leadership in Galmudug could look like.
