Waagacusub.net - The proposal by the new mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein generally known asMungab (Hawiye/Abgaal/Ely), to take control of all the security apparatus in the Banadir region (Mogadishu and its suburbs) has raised a few eyebrows. To be sure, Mungab, who replaced Mohamoud Ahmed Nur known as Tarsanas mayor of Mogadishu on 27 February, is a somewhat unusual brigadier general.
He began his career in 2002 as a member of a private militia that provided security for the telecommunications company Hormuud in Mogadishu, after which he went to study in Sudan. When he completed his studies in 2009, he was appointed secretary of the Somalian embassy in Khartoum by the then Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein Adde, who is from the same sub-clan as he. When Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed (Hawiye/Abgaal) became President of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), he promoted Mungab to the rank of colonel in the Somalian army after just a few months of military training in Sudan. Before leaving the presidency, Sheikh Sharif promoted him again to the rank of general and appointed him to the post of Chairman of the Military High Court. A truly astounding rise!
