The European Union has raised concerns over reports that the United States could restrict diesel exports, warning that any major disruption to fuel supplies could have negative consequences for both the European and American economies.

A European Commission spokesperson said Thursday that high-level contacts between Brussels and Washington were continuing as European officials sought clarity over the reported US plans.

The issue emerged after reports suggested Washington was considering a temporary restriction on diesel exports as the United States confronts sharply rising domestic fuel prices.

However, the White House has disputed reports that a blanket 90-day export ban has been decided, while US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has publicly argued that restricting diesel exports could create additional problems for American fuel markets.

US President Donald Trump has nevertheless said he supports the idea of restricting diesel exports as his administration faces pressure over record fuel costs.

Europe Faces Growing Energy Pressure

The dispute comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Europe.

Diesel prices have climbed to record levels as wars and geopolitical disruptions have reduced supplies from several major exporting countries.

European diesel futures have more than doubled since the beginning of 2026, according to market data reported this week.

The United States is a major supplier to international fuel markets, meaning any significant reduction in American exports could tighten global supplies further and potentially increase pressure on European transport, agriculture, logistics and industry.

The European Commission had already indicated Wednesday that possible US diesel restrictions would be discussed through its oil coordination mechanisms.

Brussels Seeks Clarification

For now, European officials appear to be pursuing diplomacy rather than announcing countermeasures.

The central question is whether Washington ultimately introduces an export restriction and, if it does, how extensive and long-lasting the measure would be.

The uncertainty comes as global diesel inventories remain tight and analysts warn that supply pressures could continue into 2027.

A prolonged disruption could therefore have consequences extending far beyond the United States and Europe, particularly for economies heavily dependent on imported fuel and international freight.

With energy prices once again emerging as a major economic concern, developments in Washington are now being closely watched across European capitals and global commodity markets.
