ANKARA — Libya's army chief of staff, General Mohammed Ali Ahmed Al-Haddad, was killed Tuesday evening when a private jet carrying him and four other senior military officials crashed shortly after departing from Ankara's Esenboğa Airport in Turkey. The incident occurred as the delegation was returning to Tripoli following official meetings in the Turkish capital. Anadolu Ajansı
Turkish authorities lost radio contact with the Falcon 50 business jet approximately 30 to 40 minutes after takeoff at around 20:10 local time. The aircraft reportedly issued an emergency landing request near the Haymana district, south of Ankara, before all communication ceased. Officials later located the wreckage of the aircraft and confirmed that all five people on board had died.

Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah publicly acknowledged Al-Haddad’s death, describing it as a "tragic loss” for the nation. Al-Haddad was accompanied by several senior military figures, including high-ranking generals and advisors, whose identities were confirmed by Libyan authorities.

The fatal crash marks a significant blow to Libya’s efforts to unify its fractured military leadership. Al-Haddad played a central role in ongoing efforts to integrate rival military factions under a unified command structure, a key priority for the internationally recognised Government of National Unity.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that search and rescue teams were deployed immediately after the aircraft lost contact, and wreckage was subsequently found near Kesikkavak village in the Haymana district. Air traffic around Ankara was briefly disrupted as a precaution during the initial response.

The delegation had been in Ankara earlier in the day for high-level defence discussions with Turkish officials, including meetings with Turkey’s defence and military leadership.

Turkish and Libyan authorities have opened an investigation to determine the precise cause of the crash. At this stage, no official conclusion has been released, though initial reports indicate that the aircraft encountered technical difficulties before losing contact.
