Press Release – State of Freedom of Expression in Mogadishu
Date: 12 October 2025
Location: Mogadishu, Somalia
The Associated Somali Journalists (ASOJ) expresses deep concern over the worsening situation of freedom of expression and independent journalism in Mogadishu.
In recent days, there has been a growing pattern of arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and suppression of journalists and media outlets, showing that the capital city is now facing its worst period for freedom of speech since the era of national reconciliation.
ASOJ strongly condemns all acts of harassment and censorship against journalists who are simply carrying out their professional duties. Such actions—often backed by state power and political pressure—are clear violations of Somalia’s Constitution and international human rights standards.
The organization calls on the Federal Government, security agencies, and the Benadir Regional Administration to respect the rights of citizens and journalists, and to immediately end all forms of intimidation, detention, or restrictions targeting the independent media.
Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of transparency and good governance.
