Two Egyptian warships laden with weaponry arrived at Mogadishu port on Sunday, following a recent delivery of arms from Cairo that was also destined for the Somali army, Caasimada Online news website reported.
Port operations were halted immediately after the two ships docked, and major roads in the capital Mogadishu were closed on Sunday night as offloading of the weapons commenced. The arms are set to be transported to military warehouses within the city.
The specific types and quantities of the weapons remain unconfirmed, and there has been no official statement from the Somali federal government. This follows a defense agreement signed with Cairo earlier this year, which has drawn the ire of neighboring Ethiopia.
