Although I am new to this ministry, I have decided to document violations against media operating in Somalia in the past 20 years

Mogadishu.Sunatimes- The Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia on Wednesday vowed to register and document any violations against independent media and journalists working in the country.

The newly appointed Information Minister Abdirahman Omar Osman who talked to reporters in Mogadishu on Wednesday said that his ministry was fully committed to registering killings and other violent attacks on journalists and free media outlets.

"Although I am new to this ministry, I have decided to document violations against media operating in Somalia in the past 20 years, and I will do that before any other duty in my ministry," Abdirahman Omar Osman stated during his Wednesday’s press conference in Mogadishu.

"We will make consecutive investigations and I am hopeful that we will succeed in accomplishing such a job," the minister told reporters less than a week after his appointment as Somali Information Minister.

The minister’s comments come as journalists in Somalia are nonsensically arrested, extorted, tortured, robbed or most cruelly killed by extremist rebels who are fighting the country's legal government.

Somalia, which had lacked a functioning central government for the past two decades, was last year regarded as the second most dangerous place for journalists to work in the world after the Philippines, as nine media-related deaths were counted in Somalia.
