His Excellency Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon announcing the appointment, said: “I am pleased to announce that Mr Bashir Ali has today been appointed as interim Central Bank Governor. Mr Ali brings with him a track record of reform and a wealth of knowledge and experience having previously been CEO of the Commercial Savings Bank of Somalia and served as both Deputy Governor and Governor of the Central Bank of Somalia.

“After two decades of civil war our financial institutions were not fit for purpose. Working with our international partners, IMF and World Bank great progress has already been made in modernising and reforming public finance management and our financial institutions. It will be up to Mr Ali, alongside our international partners, to continue to implement the program of reforms that are needed in our financial institutions.”

Education:
BA in Business Administration from American Century University, USA.
Master of Public Adminsitration from American Century University, USA.
MA Degree in Armed Conflict and Peace Studies from University of Nairobi, Kenya.

Career:
1962-68 Worked at Central Bank of Somalia in both commercial and central banking operations.

1969-70 Chief Auditor of Central Bank.

1971-73 Deputy Director General of the Somali Commercial Bank, and its successor the Commercial Savings Bank of Somalia.

1975 Head of a national commission tasked with reforming the financial system and administration of state owned corporations.

1976-81 Deputy Director General and then CEO and President of the Commercial Savings Bank of Somalia.

1981-88 Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Somalia, assisting the Governor in setting and formulating policies and strategies for the Bank.

2006-10 Governor of the Central Bank of Somalia. Responsible for re-establishing the Bank after the civil war.
