Mogadishu – Somalia's Military Court has opened the trial of one of al-Shabaab's most influential regional leaders, marking a major step in the government's broader campaign to dismantle the group's command structure.
The defendant, Idris Mohamed Sheikh, commonly known as Abu Abbas, is accused of serving in the militant organization for more than a decade, holding powerful administrative and strategic roles within al-Shabaab across multiple regions.
According to the prosecution, Abu Abbas joined al-Shabaab in 2009 and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as commissioner of Bardale, Dinsor, and Baidoa, and later worked closely with Ahmed Diriye (Abu Ubaidah) — now the supreme leader of the group — during his time as Governor (Waalli) of Bay and Bakool.
Prosecutors added that Abu Abbas later became Waalli of the Middle Shabelle region, a post he retained until late 2022, when government forces and local fighters captured most of the territory. He fled north during the offensive but was arrested in August 2024 while attempting to secretly return to the Bay region.
During the first court session, Abu Abbas openly admitted to being a member of al-Shabaab and serving as Waalli but claimed he had cut ties with the group three years ago. His defense team requested that he be enrolled in a rehabilitation and deradicalization program, arguing that he no longer poses a threat.
The prosecution firmly dismissed the appeal for leniency, stating that the defendant played a major role in sustaining al-Shabaab’s administrative and financial systems, including Shura Council duties and Zakat collection. They are seeking the death penalty, emphasizing the scale and consequences of his actions.
Security analysts say the trial highlights the government’s shift toward targeting not only al-Shabaab fighters but also its leadership and logistical pillars. The ruling is expected to set an important precedent as more senior militants are captured in regions retaken by the Somali National Army and community defense forces.
The trial continues, with further witness testimonies and evidence scheduled in the coming days.
