A Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drone, armed with missiles, crashed in an Al-Shabaab-controlled area in southern Somalia, marking the second incident this year of a military aircraft going down in territory held by the terror group in the conflict-ridden nation, Caasimada Online news website reported on Wednesday.
The drone crashed in the small town of Farsoley, near Qoryoley, in the Middle Shabelle region, according to reports received by the news website. Its wreckage was swiftly seized by Al-Shabaab militants.
The Turkish military and Somalia’s government have not yet confirmed the incident, which comes as Turkey carries out increased airstrikes in Al-Shabaab-held territory, including one in May that killed more than 23 civilians, drawing condemnation from human rights groups.
The incident comes months after a UN helicopter, carrying supplies for Somalia’s army, accidentally landed in an Al-Shabaab-controlled area in central Somalia and was seized, along with its crew, by the militant group. However, the armed group has since refrained from providing any details about the aircraft or those onboard.
