MOGADISHU — At least 30 people were killed and 100 more were wounded after two huge successive explosion ripped through a mosque in Somalia’s capital during noon prayers, witnesses said Saturday.
Initial reports said the explosion was caused by a bomb but there was later uncertainty over its cause, with top Alshabaab official was targeted.
The massive explosion in Abdalla Shideye mosque in Bakara market took place at around 12:00 pm during prayer sermon by the targeted senior Alshabaab official Fuad Mohamed Khalaf who is on the US terror list.
Alshabaab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage confirmed that Sheikh Khalaf was injured in the blast. He accused US companies of carrying out the attack.
“I have seen more than thirty dead on the ground and scores injured” Abdiwali, eyewitness told Sunatimes.
"There was a huge blast and the whole place lit up. Everyone started shouting and screaming and tried to help each other," another witness, told Sunatimes.
