Greetings from the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (EHAHRDP) 

Marking one of the most important moments of the human rights movement, the United Nations' (UN) Human Rights Day is annually observed on December 10th in celebration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This day will highlight and promote the achievements of human rights defenders (HRDs) as they work tirelessly to see universal human rights norms realized and respected in Somalia and Somaliland. Human Rights Day is also intended to inspire a new generation of defenders to speak up and take action to end discrimination in all of its forms whenever and wherever it is manifested. 

To mark the 2015 Human Rights Day, EHAHRDP with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), will hold a 3-day workshop entitled "Claiming Spaces: Tactical Tools for Human Rights Defenders” with the aim to strengthen the capacity of civil society to increase the awareness of the rights provided for in the UDHR and to serve as a practical tool to human rights defenders working to ensure respect for the rights to which they are entitled under this instrument by taking advantage of the spaces provided at the national, regional and international level.  

The three day forum for HRDs will develop their capacity on using regional human rights mechanisms, engaging and creating networks with other defenders in the country; meeting key representatives of regional mechanisms and exploring new and emerging technologies and strategies that can be used to advance human rights and mobilise communities for human rights promotion. The forum will take place from 6th – 8th December 2015 at Jazeera Palace Hotel, Mogadish. 

The workshop is organized as part of achieving EHAHRDP’s mission to maximize the protection of HRDs working in the sub-region of the East and Horn of Africa and to enhance the awareness of human rights work through linkages with national, regional and international like-minded entities.
