PRESS RELEASE

DAY OF GERMAN UNITY

The National Day of the Federal Republic of Germany is celebrated worldwide on 3rd of October. It marks the anniversary of German Reunification which was completed in 1990. On Saturday, the Day of German Unity was officially celebrated in Mogadishu, Somalia.

At the reception in Mogadishu, Deputy Ambassador to Somalia, Christian Resch, praised the progress achieved in Somalia in the past years. He particularly highlighted Somalia’s improved governance and state-building processes, as well as successful reconciliation on the local, regional and national level.

Nevertheless, Resch also underlined that additional efforts needed to be made to assure peace and stability in all parts of the country. He added that improving infrastructure and accelerating economic development to tackle poverty are among the most important conditions for Somalia’s successful reconstruction. Deputy Ambassador Resch expressed his hope that the example of German Unity might inspire the Somali people and its political leaders that seemingly insurmountable challenges can be overcome with good will and concerted efforts.

Germany will continue to support Somalia on its path of reconstruction. Already today, Germany and Somalia cooperate closely in the security sector. Moreover, Germany contributes to assistance projects in a variety of sectors such as infrastructure and support to returnees.
