HARGEYSA (Sunatimes)- Fresh arguments between Somaliland breakaway and the United Nations Development program have emergedt in the recent days over the agenc’s operations in the region, as the two sides failed to concur on ways of handling a long term development programs in Somaliland, officials told Sunatimes Wednesday.

The report incites that Somaliland Ministry for Planning has asked UNDP to channel any development funds meant for the region through it and make separate from their funding from that of the rest of Somalia, a request rejected by officials of the United Nations agency.

“Their arguments have intensified, it can lead UNDP to stop Somaliland activities” A government official who asked not to be named told Sunatimes.

Somaliland representatives in the talks were enraged by the retort from official of the UNDP who tabled Somaliland's development agenda as part of the wider programme for Somalia.

UNDP officials said because there isn't a central government in Somalia to take charge, it was not going to issue separate development agendas for each of the regions.

Somaliland breakway considers itself as an independent state since 1991 after dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted from power by clan militias and warlords.

UNDP has in the recent years undertaken a number of important programmes in Somaliland and it remains to be seen whether this latest conflict affects its relations with the United Nations agency.

The current government of president Dahir Riyale Kahin has discarded the subsidy from the UNDP as part of wider Somalia programme and threatened to block the agency from operation in north west Somalia regions unless it complies with its demands.
