Rome: Sunatimes- After leaving Egypt, where he met with Arab leaders, Somali President Shariff Sheikh Ahmed flew to Rome and met with Italian leaders.
President Sheriff held discussions with Italy’s Foreign Affairs Minister Franco Frattini, where they exchanged opinions regarding the devastating situation in Somalia. The President was accompanied by some of his ministers on his visit.
Italy’s Foreign Minister, Franco Franttini, promised the TFG’s representatives that his government will support them by offering training to the Somali police force thus helping the government defeat the militias opposing it.
The President cautioned that his government may collapse if the international community did not plan well to tackle the problems in Somalia. Somalia and Italy share a long relationship that started when the Horn of Africa nation declared its independence from Italy in 1960.
The President was expected to travel to Kampala, Uganda where he will attend the African Union summit. The summit is being held in the city where a week ago twin explosions, claimed by Al-shabab, killed 76 football fans.
