Mogadishu (Sunatimes) The director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) Ahmed Moalim Fiqi has resigned under unclear circumstances.
Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu on Monday, Fiqi said he has officially tendered his resignations to president Mohamud, citing no reason for the decision.
Fiqi has been leading the national spy agency since May 24, 2011 when the then president of the interim government Sharif Sheikh Ahmed appointed him to the position.
He said he was “leaving his position while healthy and having no problems,” claiming that under his leadership, the agency has unearthed several Al-Shabaab secrets which led to the foiling of militants plans aimed at harming top government leaders.
It is not yet clear whether the president will accept his resignation or not.
His two deputies have reportedly also submitted their resignation, but Bar-kulan could not independently verify this report.
Meanwhile, NISA officers Monday arrested four alleged militants in an operation aimed at stamping out remnant militants in parts of Benadir region.
Officials say the suspects, mainly youth, were arrested while committing criminal offences including lobbing grenades at government institutions and planting roadside bombs.
They also displayed explosives seized during the operation that saw the arrest of the four suspects.
The suspects are now being held at NISA bases in the capital where they are expected to undergo further interrogations.
