Sunatimes.com - Hobyo, a historic coastal city located in the Mudug region under the administration of Galmudug State, is rapidly gaining attention as one of the safest and most promising investment destinations in Somalia. Known for its long tradition of trade, fishing, and urban civilization dating back to the era of Sultan Duale Kaahiye, Hobyo has long been regarded by Somalis as a cultured and historic city inhabited by peaceful and civilized communities.

Residents say it is extremely rare to see armed individuals walking inside the city. The local population mainly consists of fishermen, traders, and business families living in a calm and stable environment along the Indian Ocean coast.

Foreign nationals, particularly Turkish and Chinese engineers and workers involved in development projects, are increasingly visible throughout the city. Locals note that many foreigners comfortably walk along Hobyo’s beaches and streets at night without armed escorts — something still uncommon in many parts of Somalia.

Major infrastructure and real estate projects are currently transforming the city. Construction is ongoing for a new modern seaport, while hotels, apartment buildings, and commercial properties are rising across different neighborhoods.

Waagacusub Real Estate is among the companies making significant investments in Hobyo’s expanding property sector, reflecting growing confidence in the city’s economic future.

A delegation from the World Bank recently visited Hobyo and inspected the location designated for a subsea internet cable landing station. The project is expected to strengthen internet connectivity, digital infrastructure, and international business opportunities in central Somalia.

Economic observers believe Hobyo could become one of Somalia’s most important employment and investment hubs within the next five years, attracting workers, entrepreneurs, and international companies seeking opportunities along the strategic Somali coastline.

With its peaceful environment, strategic location, and ongoing modernization, Hobyo is increasingly being viewed as a symbol of Somalia’s emerging economic recovery and coastal development.
