ASSOCIATED SOMALI JOURNALISTS (ASOJ): Somalia’s Independent Media Faces Growing Pressure

ASSOCIATED SOMALI JOURNALISTS (ASOJ) expresses deep concern over the growing pressure facing independent journalism and freedom of expression in Somalia at a time when press freedom and democratic values appear to be weakening globally.

Somalia increasingly appears to be entering a dangerous period in which independent media voices are being intimidated, restricted, and silenced through political pressure, arbitrary arrests, censorship, and financial influence.

ASOJ believes that independent journalism remains one of the most important pillars of accountability, transparency, democracy, and public awareness in Somalia. Silencing journalists and suppressing critical voices only weakens public trust and damages democratic progress.

We call on the Federal Government of Somalia and all Federal Member States to immediately stop:

  • Suppression and intimidation targeting journalists and media workers
  • Arbitrary arrests linked to political expression and critical reporting
  • The use of financial pressure, bribery, and political influence to silence independent media
  • Threats and harassment directed at reporters, commentators, and media activists

ASOJ emphasizes that freedom of speech, press freedom, and independent journalism must be protected in accordance with Somalia’s constitutional principles and international human rights obligations.

A democratic society cannot survive without independent voices, critical reporting, and open public debate.
