NAIROBI (Sunatimes)-Five people allegedly fund smuggling more than 900 rounds of ammunition from Somalia into the country have been arrested.
Detectives at a roadblock in Elwak, North Eastern Province, intercepted a truck said to have been carrying 998 rounds of 7.62mm calibre ammunition. The ammunition is used in AK-47 and G3 rifles.
Preliminary investigations by the acting North Eastern police boss Philip Ndolo indicated that the ammunition was being transferred to unspecified location in Nakuru.
"Officers manning a roadblock in Elwak intercepted a truck with five occupants in which they discovered 998 rounds of 7.62mm special calibre ammunition.
"The five suspects were arrested and are scheduled to appear before a Wajir court," deputy police spokesman Charles Owino Wakhong'o said.
Police believe that the ammunition was being smuggled by people intending to sell them to criminals in the country.
Police have as a result stepped up the inspection of vehicles from all border areas to stop the flow of illicit weapons into the country.
