Over 49 representatives of the African Union are attending the summit and they have all sent their condolences to the Ugandan people, particularly to those who lost their loved ones. They also wished those injured a quick recovery.
The AU praised the Ugandan government for its heroic stand in the war against terrorism on the African continent. In addition they thanked Uganda for its involvement in the Somali peacekeeping mission as it contributes the largest number of AMISOM forces in Somalia.
Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, who spoke during the opening of the summit, assured the union members that the Kampala attacks will not make his government change its foreign policy regarding Somalia and the support they give to the Somali TFG.
President Yoweri Museveni urged African Union members to give the peacekeepers the mandate to attack militias fighting them and the Somali government.
The AU members will discuss reduction of infant mortality in the sub Saharan parts of Africa, amongst many other issues. Security in Kampala, especially where the summit is being held, has been heightened.
