Minneapolis, Minnesota (January 27, 2026) — Authorities in Minneapolis have arrested and charged a man after an unknown chemical substance was sprayed at U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar during a public town hall event. The incident occurred Monday evening as Omar addressed constituents on immigration policy and enforcement practices, drawing national attention and sparking widespread condemnation.
Police identified the suspect as Anthony James Kazmierczak, a 55-year-old U.S. citizen. He was immediately apprehended at the scene and has been charged with third-degree assault in connection with the incident.
According to law enforcement officials and eyewitness reports, Kazmierczak approached the front of the audience and used a syringe-like device to spray an unknown liquid toward Rep. Omar while shouting, "You need to resign.” Security personnel and bystanders quickly subdued the suspect and prevented further escalation.
The substance was described by responders as having a strong odor, reminiscent of ammonia or vinegar. Minneapolis police hazmat teams collected samples from the scene, and forensic analysts are conducting laboratory testing to determine the chemical composition and potential toxicity of the liquid.
At this time, authorities have not confirmed that the substance was a lethal toxin or hazardous chemical. Rep. Omar did not report immediate symptoms requiring medical attention and continued her remarks following the interruption, drawing praise for her resolve.
In a statement released after the incident, Rep. Omar condemned the attack and emphasized the importance of peaceful discourse and democratic engagement. "Violence and intimidation have no place in our civic life,” she affirmed.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also strongly denounced the assault, calling it a "deeply troubling act of political violence” and reiterating the city’s commitment to public safety. "We respect the right to peaceful protest and dissent,” Frey said, "but we will not tolerate actions that endanger others or undermine civil discourse.”
Federal law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Capitol Police, are assisting local authorities in the investigation to determine whether additional charges should be pursued and to assess any broader security concerns.
The attack on Rep. Omar comes amid growing national scrutiny regarding threats directed at public officials. Recent years have seen an increase in hostile encounters and threats against lawmakers from across the political spectrum.
Officials have stated that further updates, including test results on the substance used and any additional legal actions, will be released as the investigation develops.
