Following allegations of causing civilian casualties , as reported in the media, AMISOM commanders confirm that no indirect fire was targeted at Bakara Market on 30 November 2010.
Colonel Michael Ondoga, Uganda contingent commander, said:
“AMISOM forces have been under extreme attack by extremists in the areas of Boondhere and Sigale.
“Our rules of engagement permit appropriate use of force, including indirect fire, in the protection of our won forces or civilians.
“Bakara Market is a Force registered ‘No Fire Zone’ and no commander can authorise any indirect fire into this area.
“During the day on 30th November, AMISOM forces did fire mortars at identified military targets in the area of Boondhere, where extremist forces were massing for an attack.
“These specific areas on the current front-line have been deserted by civilians since the extremists renewed attacks against AMISOM forces.
