Skegness named alongside terrorist hotspots, drug war battlegrounds and even Pyongyang in list of world's worst tourist destinations
Mayor of North England beach townsays it's 'one of the best resorts in the country' astravel websitebrands it 'a joke'
Travel website Destination Tips claims Skeggy comes ninth in a list that included Syrian war zone Damascus and other lawless hotspots.

It said: "Once thought of as quaint seaside town in northern England, Skegness is now a pile of dirt bordering the North Sea with a run-down amusement park idly resting on the land.

"Brits frequent this disappointing town hoping to spend some time at the beach, but travelling to Skegness has become a joke.

"The town, which appears to be stuck in the past, offers very few attractions for tourists to enjoy and is overpriced.

"This is one of the worst travel destinations in the world not from a safety standpoint, but you will be let down if you visit.”

The website reckons tyrant Kim Jong Un’s secret state of North Korea is only slightly worse, while crime-ridden Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea is only just better.

However, Skegness Mayor Dick Edgington leaped to the defence of the town, famous for its sandy beach, camping sites, funfair, slot machines and pier.

He said: "I have been horrified by the inappropriate comments.

"There seems to be certain people who seem to do nothing but denigrate British seaside resorts.

"Skegness is one of the best resorts in the country with the highest visitor numbers
