This is the first time the Somali region of Ethiopia is hosting the Ethiopian nation and nationalities festival in its history.

Security has been heightened by Ethiopian military and the regional paramilitary police known as Liyu Police.

Each of the nine regional states in federal Ethiopia hosts the event every year to celebrate the cultural diversity of Ethiopian communities and this year over 20 countries have been invited to witness the event in Jigjiga.
