Mogadishu (Sunatimes) UN special envoy for Somalia, Augustine
Mahiga has on Tuesday arrived in Mogadishu and met top Somali government
leaders.
While in Mogadishu, Mahiga separately held meetings with Somali
president, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, and
speaker of the parliament Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan.
The UN envoy to Somalia applauded the move by the parliament in
which they approved the Kampala Accord saying that the government is needed to
take decisive measures in restoring peace and order in the country within a
year.
Mahiga however, revealed that he discussed with the president
several issues, including the political and drought situations in Somalia
assuring the president that the UN chief Ban Ki-moon will take extraordinary
steps in organizing international support to respond to the drought crisis in
Somalia.
Somalia’s Prime Minister, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, told reporters
that the United Nations will cooperate with the government in reconciling the
Somali people and giving a fresh impetus to the security related issues.
