Omar Faruq Osman, the former general secretary of National Union of Somali Journalists who was sacked in February 2011 was arraigned before Benadir regional court on 14th March 2011, but unfortunately escaped hiding himself from transparency and corruption impeachment.

Mogadishu (RBC) the National Union of Somali Journalists NUSOJ is deeply concerned about Omar faruq’s escape from the justice while he was due to appear before of the court in Mogadishu, NUSOJ chairman said.

Omar Faruq Osman, the former general secretary of National Union of Somali Journalists who was sacked in February 2011 was arraigned before Benadir regional court on 14th March 2011, but unfortunately escaped hiding himself from transparency and corruption impeachment.

Since late 2006, dozens of Somali journalists have either been killed or forced into exile due to the ongoing fighting in the capital Mogadishu and many of the journalists were helped by international media organizations but unfortunately Faruq, who was acting as the secretary general of NUSOJ mislaid any support from the donors that later lead his sacking.

The impeachment against Omar Faruq which also included of infringe upon the organizational constitution and violate the leadership of NUSOJ during his term was submitted to the Benadir regional court by more than 80 Somali journalists.

Following the prosecuting of Omar Faruq on 14th March, the court issued a warrant which orders travel ban on the accused to refrain from sudden escape. The ministry of information of Somalia’s Transitional federal government also paused unscheduled meeting which Faruq secretly organized on behalf of NUSOJ for his special interests.

As the court was preparing special session on Omar Faruq’s prosecution, the National Union of Somali journalists realized that Faruq escaped to Djibouti after he paid backhander to Mogadishu airport security personnel.

The supreme council of NUSOJ which on 16 March had urgent and important meeting showed their great concern on how Faruq decisively escaped but also the council undertook to continue serving Somali journalists who are dealing with high risk.

The council will never halt on the impeachment against Omar Faruq, the sacked secretary which made by Somali journalists until the justice is reached and every wrong doer will be punished.
