MOGADISHU 11 May (Sunatimes) – Heavy floodwaters tearing through villages in southern Somalia, destroying hundreds of homes and forced many into open air chilly ground, residents said.

Jubba River broke banks, smashed through mud embankments of farmlands, destroyed crops and homes in the Gedo region, as the desperate residents had no help from the extremist Alshabaab group that controls the drough-hit region.

“Hundreds of homes have swept away in the floods” Abdullahi Ali, an elder in Bardhere town in the region told Sunatimes by phone.

“It’s a big tragedy, many families have lost homes and living in chilly now, we have no help from Alshabaab who claim they help people” he added.

Several towns, mainly Bardhere in the region are waterlogged, resulting in many people remaining at home and some business sites being shut as hundreds of villagers have seen their houses washed away.

Shimbirole and Markabley villages are the worst hit, as floods killed one child overnight after floods swept a makeshift house he was sleeping in.

Flash floods and heavy rains have killed hundreds of people since 2006 in Somalia as Hundreds of homes were destroyed, mainly in the agricultural middle Shabelle region.

Somalia has been without government since 1991 after dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted from power by clan militias, turning the country into never-ending chaos since then.
