MOGADISHU (Sunatimes)- After two years of forth and backward fighting
with the Islamists, Somalia‘s unpopular president has asked government
army soldiers to vacate their barracks and fill the frontlines to
fight the frenzied rebels.
Speaking to some army officials at his hilltop presidential palace,
Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmad says there was need-to-know that Somalia’s
irregularly paid troops should expel Al-Qa'ida inspired millitants
from the country immediately.
“ We have to indicate responsibility at this transition time and
manage to expel the enemies of Somalia sooner” Sharif in military
fatigue noted.
He reiterated that his government had enough arms and funds, and the
army to change their old ways of doing things, taking advantage of
those arms and funds.
“ You must do something visible and go forward for peace”
He also directed the military officers to deal with the rogue soldiers
causing problems to civilians and tarnishing the image of the armed
forces.
Last week, the former Islamist president also held a meeting with
cabinet members and called on them to help the interim government take
control of the country's regions. He urged them to fulfil the promise
they had made to put Mogadishu and other insurgent-held regions under
the control of the government within the already halved 100 days.
Somalia has been without government since 1991 after dictator Mohamed
Siad Barre was ousted from power by armed warlords who turned the horn
of Africa nation into decades of endless war.
