DJibouti (Sunatimes) The government of Djibouti has handed over nineteen Somali pirate suspects to the Somali Transitional Federal Government.
Commissioner of prisons for the TFG Gen. Abdullahi Maalim Ali has confirmed that his government has received the suspects who are now held at Mogadishu’s central prison.
The suspects were earlier arrested by the French navy in the Indian Ocean and handed over to Djibouti. The prisons commissioner said the suspect will stand trial in Mogadishu.
Commissioner of prisons Gen. Abdullahi Maalim has asked the international navies guarding the Somali coast and fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden to hand over suspected pirates to the TFG. Gen. Ali said the TFG was capable to prosecute the suspects.
Somali pirates usually hijack commercial ships sailing through the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden for ransom.
